A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which was the most powerful quake in China for thirty years, devastated Sichuan province on May 12. Fortunately, we haven't received any report of injury of sponsored child(ren) in the areas.
Nevertheless, the quake has killed nearly 10,000 and injured tens of thousands. More than 16 regions including Sichuan, Gansu, Chongqing and Yunnan are affected. Numerous buildings are collapsed, and electricity and water pipes are destroyed. The quake has also cut several major highways and communication systems. While the death toll is expected to rise, those alive are living in distress. World Vision's local staff in Sichuan will distribute 7,000 quilts and 150 tents to the victims. A team of relief workers has rushed to the hard-hit areas to help distribute food and drinking water for immediate relief. Meanwhile, World Vision's staff from the neighbouring provinces Shaanxi, Gansu, Yunnan and Guizhou are standing by for any further deployment. World Vision Hong Kong has initially committed HK$3 million for the relief of the calamity.
Please act now, and join us to help those victims in their times of difficulty!
